Itneg Kankanaey / Maeng Aplaya

Itneg Kankaney communities in Ilocos Sur have forged a distinctive cultural group known as "Bago" or "KanNeg," uniting the traditions of Kankanaey and Tingguian peoples.

Their shared heritage is reflected in phrases like "ayyaket," "Keh," "into," "isdi," "isna," "umudong," "datako," "kasus," and "yah," particularly among the Maeng Itneg Aplaya. Sadly, their language faced challenges in the educational system, attempting to marginalize it. Originally hunters and gatherers from Sagada, these communities migrated to Baugen/Sagada, where their animistic beliefs merged with Christian influences. This syncretism is evident in customs related to the deceased, natural medicine, and folklore.
